Breaking Silence

How a Small Village Rewrote the Story of Women’s Health

Where the Silence Began

For generations, Jalalpur, a small village in Kanpur Dehat, carried within it a quiet struggle. Women and girls bore the weight of taboos around menstruation, faced risky pregnancies without proper care, and navigated adolescence with little guidance or support. The absence of open conversations meant that health challenges weren’t just physical, they were social, cultural, and deeply personal. Jalalpur was not unlike countless villages across India, where systemic neglect left women’s health at the margins of development.

The Turning Point

Change began with the Model Gaon initiative, powered by Bharat Serums
and Vaccines Ltd. (BSV). What set this effort apart was not only its focus on menstrual hygiene, perinatal care, and adolescent health, but the way it invited the community to step into the conversation. Schools became hubs of awareness, health camps brought essential care closer to women, and local volunteers helped dismantle age-old taboos. Sanitary product drives and youth-friendly clinics bridged gaps that had long been ignored, while training midwives and ensuring emergency care gave pregnant women a renewed sense of safety and dignity.

What Changed Forever

The results were more than numbers, though they were striking: over 88% of girls now understand their menstrual cycles, 72% use safe products, and the majority of births happen in hospitals with regular care. What matters more is the cultural shift, menstruation is no longer a whispered topic, adolescents are confident in seeking health support, and mothers approach pregnancy with knowledge and access. Jalalpur’s story is no longer one of silence but of agency, empathy, and empowerment. It is proof that when communities, companies, and local leaders come together, even the most deep-seated challenges can be reimagined into lasting change
